Canalicchio di Sopra – Rosso di Montalcino 2018

Montalcino is bakermat van een wereldberoemde wijn: Brunello di Montalcino. De Rosso di Montalcino is het kleine en jongere broertje van de Brunello. Minder lang gerijpt, van jongere druivenstokken en iets toegankelijker dan zijn grote broer.

De Rosso di Montalcino van Canalicchio di Sopra is mooi robijnrood van kleur met reflecties van granaatrood. De neus is fruitig, met veel aroma’s van rood fruit, zoals kersen en rode bessen, met wat viooltjes, Mediterraanse kruiden en wat koffie. De smaak is fruitig en elegant, medium body, harmonieus en mooie crispy finish.

De druiven voor deze Rosso komen van de jongere wijnstokken van het domein, waarbij het overgrote deel in de kleibodems van de Canalicchio Cru wijngaarden wordt geteeld. De druiven worden eind september met de hand geoogst. 

De vergisting van de druiven vindt plaats in roestvrijstalen vaten, met dagelijks overpompen van de hoed. De schillen blijven 15 tot 20 dagen bij het sap voor de extractie van kleur en smaak. De wijn rijpt daarna 12 maanden in grote eikenhouten vaten (25 en 50 hectoliter) van Frans en Slavonisch eiken.

De Rosso di Montalcino is heerlijk bij mooie pasta’s, wild en vleesgerechten.

“This is a terrific wine that is one big step above your standard Rosso and one tiny step below your standard Brunello. The Canalicchio di Sopra 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is a fresh and versatile wine. The 2018 vintage was cool and had more rainfall than average. Windy conditions dried and helped to concentrate the fruit right before harvest. This wine is made from a selection of the estate's youngest vines, with about 90% of the fruit coming from the Canalicchio area and 10% from Montosoli. I had a glass with a delicious plate of vegetarian lasagna. This wine moves across the palate with steely precision, breaking up any cheese, butter or olive oil flavors along the way. It offers a snappy, lean to medium-weight drinking style with lots of freshness and enough texture to withstand some near-term cellar aging.” (Monica Larner)
